Cardiothoracic and vascular medical devices under pressure to stay competitive

As the consumers of medical devices, surgeons must take an active role in commercial activity and post-market surveillance in order to improve patient care and ensure patient safety. The medical device industry is highly complex, and understanding healthcare organizations can help explain the process of diffusion of innovations in healthcare. Surgeons need to be involved in all aspects of the medical device life cycle, from product development to post-market surveillance, in order to ensure that new products are safe and effective.

The European Commission has highlighted the importance of considering the organizational aspects of innovation, including multidisciplinary partnerships of patients and users. Technology and innovation represent an evolutionary process, and the diffusion of innovations in health care is complex.

Understanding healthcare organization as professional bureaucracies orientated towards stability can help explain why and how innovations such as medical devices may or may not be accepted into the market and how they can stay in it. However, the cost for cardiothoracic and vascular devices to stay in the market should not be paid by their inappropriate use.
