A new study published in Physiotherapy Canada conducted by researchers from Ireland has revealed an increasing use of standardized outcome measures among physiotherapists in the country.
Results from the survey found that the use of these outcomes has significantly increased in comparison to a similar survey conducted previously in Canada. The study indicates that the adoption of these measures is becoming more widespread amongst physiotherapists in Ireland.
This study of physiotherapists working with elderly patients has revealed a growing trend in the use of standardized outcome measures. Survey results showed that senior clinical physiotherapists have an increasing level of confidence in using such measures, and have adopted them into their practice over time. Questions asked in the survey centered around usage of these measures, as well as the nature and pattern of their application.
Irish physiotherapists have charted changes in practice over the past five years, reflecting an increasing usage of outcome measures. However, respondents acknowledge barriers to the more consistent implementation of such processes, most commonly due to a lack of time and resources. There also exists a lack of professional consensus on what instruments should be used, complicating matters further. When compared to a 1998 survey of Canadian therapists, concerns have been raised that none of the available instruments meet the needs of their clients.
