When prescribing ambulatory assistive devices such as canes, crutches, and walkers, it is important to have a detailed understanding of how these devices work in order to avoid any potential problems. Normal gait cadence and the different gait patterns used in reciprocating and swinging gait must be understood in order to properly prescribe the right device. Additionally, the types of assistive devices, their modifications, associated gait patterns, physiologic demand, proper fitting, and indications for use must all be considered. By taking all of these factors into account, orthopaedic surgeons can ensure that their patients receive the best possible care.
